His influence on his students was such that. Gregory's College produced a generation of artists who were mentored by him.
I was privileged to work with him in his Ovuomaroro studio and gallery and in the Harmattan Workshop he organises for artists from all over the world.
This great art intellectual whom I regard as 'a professor of professors' is indeed a tower of knowledge and very contemporary in the knowledge of art. Yet he is so self - effacing. At his age he is unbelievably strong. His strength is like the strength of a youth in his twenties. He wakes up early, he jogs and exercises and by 7 am he is in his studio. Usually when I get a very early call in the morning it's usually him wanting to say something to me.
As busy as he is he gets invitations from art schools around the country to give talks at their functions. I have been privileged to accompany him to some of those places. A couple of years ago he revisited the Haystack Art Workshop in the United States along with Sam Ovraiti, a renowned painter and water colourist. Also a couple of years ago he was honoured by the Smithsonian Institution for his contributions to art. I wish Dr. Onobrakpeya more productive years in stable health and longer life. We worked together in his 2nd floor studio on solar engravngs. I was introduced to his work through a contemporary African art exhibit at Howard that year curated by Dr. Kojo Fosu Baiden, then an African Art History professor at Howard.Making Art Touching Liveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15212947015149200913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-886229977251215080.post-38924353594466637012010-09-25T02:40:47.688-07:002010-09-25T02:40:47.688-07:00I am so happy to read this here. I had the honour to meet Bruce Onobrakpeya several times at exhibitions in Lagos in the 70ties. I so love his etchings and paintings.Amina's World - Aminas Welthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14661430597486281281noreply@blogger.com
